The Blue Screen of Death…Well, Almost
Posted by Matt McWilliams in Fun Stuff on August 31st, 2009
Today, I had every marketers nightmare…the blue screen of death!
Immediately, panic set in.? I had not yet backed up my files to an external hard drive.? All my email, docs, spreadsheets, etc. gone!? POOF!
Thankfully I could boot in safe mode and save everything and then I find out the the blue screen was not so deadly, but just a Microsoft update problem for dummies like me who had not installed Service Pack Two yet.
At least I got a warning from MS…off to get an external hard drive!
Psychology of Logo Colors
Posted by Matt McWilliams in Web Design on August 28th, 2009
How much thought did you put into your logo?? Really, how much did you consider the emotions and reactions of your site visitors?
In my graphic design days, I relied on me, myself, and I for judging my designs.? Ok, my, myself, and the customer.? I never gave any thought to how it would make someone feel.? Would it lead to sales?? Who knew?? If it looked good, it was a success.
Earlier today Jim Kukral posted a link on Twitter to an old link from Logo Blog about the psychology of logo colors.? It is a quick read and definitely worth a read if you have never considered the topic before.

Are you marketing Learn and Master products on YouTube?? If not, it is one good way to market.? If you are or about to, this post is for you!
The aimClear Marketing Blog did a post today about getting your videos to rank better on YouTube.? They give 15 tips for leveraging the video giant to rank better in their searches…and therefore Google’s rankings for these videos.? Tips include:
- Rate Other videos - in return they will rate yours. High ratings = better search results.
- Leave comments - others will return. Comments = higher rankings.
- Use YouTube Insights Analytics - you can track a lot with this and the data will really help.
- Use your title in the file name for the raw video.
- Post Video Responses to other videos.
- Use the Annotations - give them your link or point out specials or sales.
- Embed the video in relevant places. Embedded videos are tracked and count in the algorithm YouTube uses to rank videos.

Posted by Matt McWilliams in Legacy News on August 26th, 2009
| This past Monday we launched our Learn and Master Painting course and so far the response has been great!
I mentioned in the announcement email that I would soon be announcing a special contest for our ShareASale affiliates just for painting. Well, I decided that we should not have just one contest, but THREE! ShareASale affiliates, if you are not already a part of the Learn and Master affiliate program, now is the time to join! |

- Beginning today as well, the first 5 affiliates who make 10 sales of Learn and Master Painting will earn a $100.00 bonus.
- All affiliates who make a sale of Learn and Master Painting before the end of September will immediately receive a commission bump of 2% on all future sales.
All of these bonuses are in addition to our other current bonuses:
- Your 2nd sale, no matter when it is, always earns a $50.00 bonus.

Here We go Again: Missouri Wants an Affiliate Tax?
Posted by Matt McWilliams in Affiliate Marketing News on August 25th, 2009
Yesterday I read a post on the ABestWeb forum from Matt Enders in North Carolina about Missouri being the next to enact an affiliate / advertising tax.? While the source of the post (a letter to his friend in NC) may seem unthreatening, this could get bad for affiliate marketers.
Matt covers the topic great on his blog, and my friend Geno Prussakov does such a great job explaining this as well, that I will spare you my commentary, other than to remind you of what YOU can do.? You can read our list of action items to fight the affiliate tax from earlier this year.? Here are some resources for Missouri as well:
- Contact Your Missouri legislator now.
- Use hashtags #moadvertisingtax and #moaffiliatetax
More action items to come so be on the lookout!

Thank you for opening a new world to me through Learn & Master Painting. I had always thought that one was either an artist or not. I wanted to paint, but never thought it was possible because I don’t feel that I have an artistic bone in my body. I now realize that I was missing the technique that would get me to the point where I could use my own artistic expression. I do not have any type of artistic background, but I have always wanted to paint. I am very analytical, total left brained. I never thought I could paint. But, Gayle provides easy step-by-step instructions. Wow, I can paint! I have to say that Gayle is very endearing. She seems very genuine and down to earth. I don’t feel she’s talking down to me and I feel like she really cares about my success. If I were to take an in-person art class, Gayle is the instructor I would want to have.

Google Moves AdWords Ads
Posted by Matt McWilliams in Pay Per Click (PPC), Search Engine Optimization (SEO) on August 21st, 2009
| Did anyone else notice that Google recently moved the AdWords ads to the left?
Big deal, right?? Sure, until you consider that it seems to have increased their click through rate (CTR)10%…which translates into millions upon millions of dollars for big G, and more clicks for you?PPC affiliates. |
![]() |
Here is a look at the changes.? Where there used to be a huge white space, now there are ads.? Much closer to the natural listings and much more likely to be clicked.

Honestly, I did not even notice it until someone pointed it out to me, but apparently at least 10% of the people noticed it enough to be more likely to click on them.? On our ads, we noticed as much as a 30% higher click through rate on some campaigns, which is amazing.
What have you found?with your campaigns?
Something is Brewing at Google

As many of you probably know, Google announced that they will soon be changing their infrastructure a bit. The new system, which is called "Caffeine" will be out sometime in the near future and can already be previewed in Google’s Sandbox. |
![]() |
Overall, it seems that the changes are minimal.? It is much faster (yeah, because Google was just crawling before, right? haha).? There are some marginally noticable differences in search results though and one of the best tools to view the differences is the Google Caffeine Compare by Facesaerch (not a typo…that is their name).? You can compare side-by-side results from current Google and new Google.

Truly Touching Feedback from a L&M Guitar Customer
Posted by Matt McWilliams in Legacy News on August 19th, 2009
Today Steve Krenz (our guitar instructor on Learn & Master Guitar) got another one of those emails that makes everything we do worth it.? I can’t really speak to how much our products are truly impacting people’s lives.? Thanks for helping!
Here is the email we got today:
Steve,
I know you’re busy, but I want to thank you for a wonderful guitar course!? I purchased it approximately 2 years ago or so after returning from a tour in Kuwait/Iraq and retiring from the military after 30+ years.? I had to medically retire because of depression at the young age of 48 but no longer take any medication.? Both sons are grown and our marriage is still successful after 30 years.? God is so good!
My musical experience began at age six sitting behind a piano until about age thirteen when I just simply “quit.”? It was a mistake but looking back at past mistakes never helps one go forward.
I’m now playing gospel music at a nursing home weekly and have been invited to play a solo of Amazing Grace, in Open D tuning, at a local baptist church.? There’s no way to explain clinical depression to someone that’s never been through that dark tunnel.? Learning the guitar helped lift me from that depression along with getting active in church and family.
Thanks Again & God Bless You.

What If Someone Copies Your Web Site?
Posted by Matt McWilliams in Affiliate Tips, Affiliate Tools, Web Design on August 14th, 2009
Previously, I have covered the topic of web site copyright infringement, specifically affiliates who copy other web sites.? My basic message was don’t do it!
Later I shared some tips for preventing others from copying you, protecting your web site copy, and two people left comments with their own ways of combating copying, by preventing someone from framing your site and using Google Alerts to catch copycats.
But what about when you are the victim of copyright infringement?? What do you do now?
First, let’s acknowledge that you are likely upset. Calm down first and get to work.? You will need your wits about you if you intend to do anything.
Second, o some research on the offending web site first.? Do they have a contact page?? Is their contact information on the site anywhere?? If so, contact them and ask them to remove the copied content.
Keep in mind that it is entirely possible that the web site owner does not know that they are copying your site.? Perhaps they have a freelance copywriter that they hired who is cheating them.? Perhaps someone who works for them is lazy and decides copying your work is easier than writing his own stuff.? Either way, keep your first contact professional and courteous.? In other words, be nice and give them the benefit of the doubt.
Usually, this is all that needs to be done.? If they take it down, great!? You are done…sort of.? Just remember to keep an eye on them.
Third, if their contact information is not on their site, look them up at Domain Tools and see if their contact information can be found there.? Follow the first step from there.
Fourth, if that does not work, contact their web hosting company and tell them that the site is copying your content.? You can find the host by using Domain Tools as well.? Usually, if you can prove that the other site copied your site, the host will take their site down almost immediately.
Fifth, how can you PROVE that they copied you and not the other way around?? By using a tool such as the Wayback Machine to show them that your site looked like this X days ago and theirs did not.? Sometimes this is hard.? If you cannot prove it in this way, you may be out of luck.
That is unless your content has just enough to it that is specific to your site…i.e. your certain writing style, your name, a reference to your location, etc.? Something that would establish that indeed you wrote the content and the other site copied you.
Sixth, if this approach fails, then consider a formal Cease and Desist letter from an attorney.? Send it via certified mail.? If this is unaffordable, you may consider using a template from a site such as Legal Zoom, but an attorney is strongly recommended.
Lastly, if all else fails, file a DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) copyright infringement complaint with the major search engines.
I hope that you never have to use any of these tips, but if you, I hope they help!
Wonderful Words from a Learn and Master Affiliate
Posted by Matt McWilliams in Legacy News, Web Design on August 14th, 2009
Today, I got one of those special emails that always make my day.? I sent a copy of our Learn and Master Guitar Home School course to an affiliate.? He got it 2 days later, a true testament to how fast and awesome our shipping department is.? And this is what he said (he gave permission to share this of course):
Hey Matt, just wanted to let you know that I got the course (just 2 days after you said you were sending it) and I have been reviewing it. I have to tell you that it’s fantastic! As a teacher I value the idea of recycling concepts to reinforce student aquisition of skills and techniques. The way you all have set up the way the Lesson Sessions, the Bonus Workshops, and the Jam Along CDs does a great job of letting the student take a concept and really make it their own.
The quality of the instruction and the DVDs is beyond other guitar instructionals I’ve gotten. It’s just a great product and it’s easy to see why you all seem to be leading the field.
You guys have been fantastic to work with over the past 4 years. Thanks so much and I look forward to the next 4.
Thanks Adam!
Why do so Few Affiliates Care about the Advertising Tax?
Posted by Matt McWilliams in Affiliate Marketing News on August 12th, 2009
My friend Geno Prussakov posted on his blog Monday about the paltry number of attendees at the Affiliate Summit session on the Advertising Tax.
One thing that I felt sorry to witness was the fact that out of the 2,500 Affiliate Summit?s attendees only 29 came to the ?Advertising Tax: What Happened and What?s Next? session. Taking into consideration that 7 of them left the room when the Q&A session started, the total number of attentive listeners equaled less than 1% of the conference?s attendees. Karen Garcia has mentioned to me that similar attendance numbers were registered on the Day 1 when an ?Advertising Tax Impact, Accomplishments and the Future? panel was held.
| Why is it that so few affiliates seem to care about the advertising tax?? North Carolina affiliates sure seem to care, at least based on the affiliate forums and efforts put forth over the past few months there.? So do California affiliates, Rhode Island affiliates, Hawaii affiliates, and other states that have been effected recently by the advertising tax.? In California, the outcry from affiliates was a big reason that Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed the Advertising Tax. | ![]() |
I understand that it is a boring issue.? Taxes are never fun. But this greatly impacts you if you live in the United States.? So many states are facing record budget deficits this year and probably will next year as well.? They are going to be looking for any and every way to collect more revenue. (Read: new taxes).
The issue is causing families to move to avoid the tax, which will significantly reduce their income.? It is causing programs to shut down their affiliate programs in certain states, another reason for many families moving.? It is causing some affiliates to seek alternative employment and newbies to never get started.
We will continue to be an advocate against this tax, publicly in any way that we can be involved.? I hope you will join the effort as well!
What can you do?? Read this post about actions that YOU can take.
