“L” is for Lifetime Commission Increase

The first day of LEGACY Week next week, Monday, November 2, is the letter “L.”

“L” is for Lifetime Commission Increase.? On Monday, every affiliate making their first sale will receive a 3% lifetime commission increase.? Any affiliate making over $450 in sales will also earn a 3% lifetime commission increase.? And any affiliate who signs-up TODAY gets a 3% lifetime commission increase just for emailing me or sending a tweet to me (@LegacyAffiliate) to let me know they want the increase!? Each offer is exclusive of the others.

Stay tuned Monday for the announcement of the next letter, “E” and what it stands for.? Each announcement will take place the morning before the next letter!

Good luck!

More ShareASale ThinkTank Recaps and Pictures #ThinkTank09

As expected, a lot of the attendees are posting their recaps of the ShareASale ThinkTank event this past weekend, so I thought I would share as many of them as I can find with you, along with some more pictures of the event.? My recap is below amongst the pictures.? Yesterday I posted my Lessons Learned from ThinkTank :)

Unfortunately, I often forget that I have a camera and so I only took a few pictures, most of them of the beautiful golf course views and of Shawn Collins’ face :)

Shawn Collins Recap - Great recap. Shawn (@affiliatetip), Missy Ward (@missyward), and Jason Rubacky (@jasonrubacky) followed my foursome around on the golf course and constantly stalked us.? Weirdos :)? I had forgotten about that until I read the recap.? He covers other stuff too.

Joe Sousa Recap - Joe (@drcool73) is an absolutely awesome dude that I finally got to meet this weekend.? His misfortunes on the golf course were legendary and amused the masses profusely.

Logan Thompson Recap - I thoroughly enjoyed meeting with Logan on Saturday. Thanks for the kind words in your post!

Missy Ward Recap

Scott Jangro Recap - Scott is a fellow Red Sox fan so it’s always enjoyable seeing him.

Friday Tara and I went to Balboa Island and enjoyed the shops and ate breakfast there.? I had salt water taffy for the first time in my life and ate about 50 pieces over the weekend. Yum!

When we got back to the hotel, I headed to the golf course and warmed up before playing golf with Rob Duva of Ring Revenue, Durk Price of eAccountability, and David Zelken of ShareASale.

We had a lot of fun and truly enjoyed the views of the course.? Here are some views of the course:

South Course 18th Hole - Pelican Hill Resort

Friday night, we had a great networking reception and the food was absolutely incredible.? I met some awesome people for the first time, like Liz Fogg Abanon (@eababon) and Mike Lyman with Signing Time,? and caught up with some old pals and acquaintances like Deborah Carney (@loxly), Joe Wojciechowski, Melanie Seery (@mellies), Ratna Venigandla, Adam Riemer, Geno Prussakov (@eprussakov), and more.

Saturday morning started off with a great breakfast.? I ate a LOT so I was in the mood for a nap after that, but instead I caffeinated myself and headed into the first sessions of the day.

After the men and women demographics sessions, we had a break, during which I began an apparently new trend of dipping white chocolate shavings into whipped cream, a la tortilla chips, at the coffee bar.? Yum!

Then it was time for my session, only I forgot it was my time.? I sat at my table looking up at the panel thinking “who is the doofus that is missing his panel?”? Come to find out that it was me! Oops!

So I ran up and began our session on Education and Life Experience.? My panel included Iman Jalali of Train Signal IT Training, Mike Lyman of Signing Time, and Kelly with Viator Travel.? Here is a picture of that.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2544/4042069086_0cb7352867.jpg

One of the cool features of the event was the big screen Twitter feeds behind us.? Of course, I, with my infinite ADD, got stuck behind the laptop controlling the screens and was constantly distracted by the various humorous posts with the hashtag #thinktank09, especially Shawn Collins’ hashtag spamming efforts.? He will stop at nothing!

After our sessions, we all had lunch with the various vendors.? Each vendor had a table and it was great to sit down with some of them and discuss how we could work together.? I truly finally meeting Sabrina Malone from WorkingMom.com and her husband for the first time. Sabrina, your painting course is on the way!? I also got to catch up with Angel Djambazov (@djambazov).? Here is the setting of the lunch:

Shawn Collins and I Talking and Enjoying the View on Saturday

After lunch I wanted to take a nap, but instead I changed into shorts and a T-shirt (I was sweating profusely in jeans and long sleeve shirt) and headed over to our private cabana around the pool for meetings with affiliates.? What a cool setting!

Meeting with Jen Goode and Joe Sousa

Part of the way through, Brian brought us cupcakes and I devoured at chocolate with chocolate and more chocolate cupcake. Then I slept while affiliates came by and stole courses (kidding!).? It was around 5:00 PM and I had a break and found out that Tennessee lost to Alabama on a last second blocked kick.? I was then depressed for a bit but thankfully I got to meet with some people who cheered me up and truly inspired me.

That night, Tara and I headed down to Laguna Beach for dinner.

Sunday morning started off with another amazing breakfast. Waffles, and muffins, and omelets, oh my!? Then we had the “Things We Need to Fix Session” with Brian and the ShareASale crew.? Everyone had the ability to openly share feedback, ideas, and pose questions to each other and ShareASale.? It was a great learning experience as well as a great time to offer some ideas to ShareASale and discuss them with other merchants, affiliate managers, and affiliates.

Lessons Learned from ShareASale ThinkTank #thinktank09

Tara and I got back from ShareASale’s ThinkTank last night in Newport Coast, California at about 3:30 AM.? Our flight was delayed in Dallas which sucked but at least we are back!

I learned a lot there and truly met some awesome people, so here is my list of lessons learned at ShareASale ThinkTank 2009.

  1. From Things from Another World (@TFAW), 33% of gift cards never get used.
  2. From Mike Lyman of Signing Time, the Hawaiian island of Kauai is apparently infested with wild chickens…long story as to why but kind of funny!
  3. Shawn Collins (@affiliatetip) is stronger than I thought and Jason Rubacky (@jasonrubacky) is lighter.
  4. http://legacyaffiliateblog.com/images/tt1.jpg

Soon after this we found out that Jason can't swim

  5. That we should remind our affiliates that we DO allow trademark bidding so they are not fearful of violating this and getting reported to ShareASale.? Doing this soon!
  6. That 4 desserts at lunch always sounds like a good idea at the time but never works out so well.? This is a picture of lunch from Shawn Collins:
  7. http://cdn.cloudfiles.mosso.com/c54102/app1032171256413544.jpg

  8. That Joe Sousa (@drcool73) is like Rainman when it comes to naming that tune.? Dude knows half the songs written since 1970 in less than 5 notes. Scary!
  9. That we need some shorter widgets…less content.? Let the affiliate get them to our site, then WE make the sale. Via Melanie Seery (@mellies).
  10. That white chocolate shavings make for great tortilla chips when dipped into whipped cream. Just ask Wade Tonkin (@affile8warrior).
  11. That ShareASale does have product level reporting.? Oops…kind of missed that one.? We are setting that up very soon!
  12. That Shawn Collins will stop at nothing to promote Affiliate Summit, even going so far as to hijack the #thinktank09 hashtag.
  13. That Jason Rubacky (@jasonrubacky) really gets a big head when you give him large signs commanding the audience to do things like clap or laugh.
  14. That it is possible to whiff a putt in golf. Really, just ask Asif Malik (@asif_malik) of GoldenCan.
  15. That I need to get more familiar with the affiliate interface.
  16. The sunsets in California are amazing! This picture is from @Rehan
  17. California Sunset at ThinkTank by ShareASale

  18. That Ballroom Dancing can even bring brothers closer together. Just ask the Schaaf Brothers (one part @brookschaaf).
  19. That our mission, Bringing Personal Dreams Within Reach, really does drive everything we do. Until I heard myself talking about what we do, I didn’t truly realize this.
  20. That it is possible to gain 5 pounds in 3 days.? The food was amazing!
  21. I already knew this, but this event just further proved that ShareASale is without a doubt the best network there is.? Great job guys and thank you for a wonderful weekend!

Let the Testing Begin!

We are getting ready for The December push, are you?

As I posted here (Biggest Months for Learn and Master Courses) December is our biggest month, but unlike most retail companies, the excitement for us continues into January, February, March, and even April.? November is our 6th biggest month.

So this month and next, we will be doing a lot of testing and I wanted to both share the tests with you and encourage you to be testing significantly this month and next.

We will be testing pretty much everything, using A/B and multivariate testing.? Here some previews of the various things we will be testing in the next week or two, with more tests coming later.? Ultimately, our metric is revenue per visitor and every effort is focused on increasing that…and thus your commissions!

Our Calls to Action Order Buttons

This is small sampling of order buttons we are testing.

Order Buttons for Multivariate Testing

Testing Order Buttons - Buy Now

Order Buttons We are Testing for Conversions

Video or No Video

How does the video on our product pages effect conversions?? We will find out.? Add it, subtract it, move it, smaller, larger…

Adding Other Courses to Each Product Page

Graphics in our side white space for each product will show images such as this.? We will be testing different versions of them.

Other Courses - Testing Conversions with Multivariate

More tests to come!

What are YOU testing this month and next?

Slapped by Google, Now what?

Earlier today I got an email about another Google Slap.? This was one of many emails or instant messages that I have received in the past month asking the same question…what do I do?

Most of the tips I have shared have been virtually the same, so I thought I would go ahead and share them with you here.? This is really not much of a list of recovering from or surviving a Google Slap, but more a list of best practices for your web site and SEO efforts and Pay-Per-Click campaigns.? If you have been slapped for poor quality sites, had your PPC campaigns shut down or SEO efforts derailed by being removed from the Google listings, these tips should help.

  1. Make sure your contact page has the necessary components: phone number, email address, physical address, etc. Read my article in Issue 7 of FeedFront for more.
  2. Reduce the number of outgoing links by about 1/3 or so.
  3. Add more internal links. If needed, create more internal content pages and link to them.? This reduces the percentage of outgoing links.
  4. Slowly get more links to your site. I realize this is easier said than done, but most importantly use different anchor texts than you have been using and vary them greatly.
  5. Submit your sitemap XML to Google Sitemaps.
  6. Update your site. Move content, change words, especially header text and bold text.
  7. Use nofollow for all affiliate links in your robots.txt file.

Don’t treat your site like an affiliate site.? Treat it like a help site and make sure that you would trust your own site to offer informative content and recommended products.

What are your favorite tips?

Email From Line Length

Justin Premick recently posted something that I just shared with our resident email guru, Morgan, who sends all of our company emails and newsletters.

It is about email from line subject length…in other words, your name or company name or name of the newsletter.? Mine, for example, is “Matt McWilliams.”? A recent newsletter I got came from “Affiliate Marketing Professionals Group Members” which showed up as “Affiliate Marketing Prof.” in my email box.

Different email clients allow a different number of characters in their from lines, ranging from 21 (Windows Live Hotmail OSX) to at least 32 (Outlook 2007 and Mozilla Thunderbird).

Yahoo displays 22 characters, GMail shows 24 characters on both XP and OSX, and Live Hotmail shows 23 in XP.? AOL Webmail allows 24 and the iPhone 20. GMail on the Android phone shows only 24.

So, what to do about this exactly?? Well, my personal opinion is that you should target using a maximum of 22 characters since that will show all of them on 99% of emails clients.? Of course, it should be something that is recognizable and easy to read.? Make sure that if they signed up for the “Guitar Players News” newsletter that they are getting the email from “Guitar Players News” not “Super Duper Guitar Site.”

Keep it simple, keep it short, and keep it consistent!

You can read Justin’s post here.

Google Images Search Results Optimization

Have you every thought about optimizing your images for Google Images?? I don’t necessarily think it would drive a ton of traffic to your site, but it certainly could drive enough to make following these simple tips from Scott at the Stepforth blog.? He offers 10 great, yet easy to follow tips that could help you optimize your images to appear high in Google Images search results.? Image if someone wants? a good image of a “guitar teacher” and your image comes up #1…that could very well lead to a handful of sales each year.

Here are the tips, along with a link to his full post.

  1. Name the image file well. Use dashes (-) and name it something like “guitar-teacher.jpg” as opposed to “image2.jpg.”
  2. Use Image Alt Text and use it well. Name it “Guitar Teacher Offering Instruction to Guitar Students”
  3. Use the Image Title Attribute . Same as #2, use it well.
  4. Have relevant surrounding text.
  5. Optimize your whole web site.
  6. Use a high image resolution. This seems to affect the rankings. Higher resolutions tend to gravitate towards the top.
  7. Use an image specific page. When linking to a higher resolution version, create its own optimized page.
  8. Use Image Link Anchor Text. “Large Guitar Teacher Offering Instruction to Guitar Students,” for example.
  9. Use the other alt tags, height and width.? Don’t forget these!
  10. It’s a fun one, so check out his full post here.

Great post Scott!

Even Negative Reviews Increase Sales

My friend Geno Prussakov recently posted about negative reviews and reviews in general on his site, quoting and utilizing much data from a recent CNN article about the subject.

I cannot add much to it other than to say “right on, Geno!” and that I have been giving this advice for a while now.

One quote from the CNN article:

Consumers are becoming used to searching for reviews when they shop online. Internet shoppers rank reviews as the most desired feature of a Web site, according to a recent survey by Forrester Research.

It?s important that site owners resist the temptation to edit or delete reviews they don?t like. ?If everything is positive, that raises a red flag among consumers,? says Forrester?s Anderson?

Did you catch that?? Most desired!

And those negative reviews…they typically RAISE sales!

Here is Geno’s post.? A definite must-read.

Facebook Advertising for Affiliates from Logan Thompson

I have made it very clear that I believe in affiliates using Facebook advertising. The targeting is great for affiliates promoting a niche product like ours.?The cost is currently very low.?The conversions are good. It’s got everything you could ever want in an effective marketing medium.

Here are some previous posts about Facebook Advertising?from our blog:

Facebook Targeting that Works with our Program

Facebook Advertising Adds New Features

Facebook Ads for Newbies

Amazing Social Media Stats

http://legacyaffiliateblog.com/images/blues-guitar-small.jpg

Today, I had the fortune of reading a post from Logan Thompson, one of my favorite bloggers in affiliate marketing.

He gives 10 tips for How to Profit on Cost Per Sale Campaigns with Facebook in which he shares some of his successes?and errors with Facebook advertising.

I have to disagree with #5, which says: “Don’t Promote Expensive Products.”?Based on our own advertising and the feedback from others, if the targeting is right, our products can really fit our niche market.? Our niche is typically best targeted towards middle-class, middle-aged?people?who are actively interested in the product we are offering. So focusing on the right keywords and narrowing it down to our niche will get you some great results.

Currently, the 25-year old and up crowd only makes up about 30% of the users of Facebook, but that group is also growing at about 200% per year.? There is a sizable market there!

Overall, I give Logan’s post?two big thumbs up?though, so check it out.
