Advertising Tax Coming to Tennessee?

The Performance Marketing Association issued a release on Tuesday regarding a Colorado-like Tax Bill here in Tennessee.

According to the release, the bill copies that of Colorado from earlier this year, requiring out-of-state merchants to report to our state revenue department all sales made by Tennessee customers.

Like the Colorado bill, it is not the typical advertising tax that requires merchants that has a direct impact on affiliates, however, as evidence by Amazon’s dropping Colorado affiliates, it could effect online merchants big time.

More to come soon.

In the meantime, you can use these links for a list of legislators.

Lessons on Subject Line Length from Amazon

Mark Brownlow wrote a great article recently on the Email Marketing Reports blog about the subject line length of Amazon emails.

He charts 187 emails from Amazon and finds that the average email subject line is 57 characters.

He also finds that most of their email subject lines are even less, around 39-52 characters.

This is relevant to email marketers because, well, Amazon is really, really good at email marketing.

Mark has some great examples and some very interesting commentary for those email marketers out there, so I strongly suggest checking out his post.

California Chamber of Commerce on the #advertisingtax

Hooray for the California Chamber of Commerce for weighing in today on the #advertisingtax in California!

They point out 3 major points as to why the tax is bad for California (and every state!).

  1. Tax Revenue Loss - In California alone, it is estimated that $123 million would be lost in income tax.
  2. It Harms California Companies - Instead of using California-based companies, people will use other companies based in other states.
  3. It’s Unconstitutional - Oh yeah…the Constitution!

This is a great primer on the topic and especially helpful to those who may not be experts on the subject.? Read it all here.
