Affiliate Advocacy Conference Call about the #AdvertisingTax

Just finished listening to the Affiliate Advocacy Conference Call with Melanie Seery. Her main guests were Brian Littleton, CEO of ShareASale, and Jen Goode, who was one of the main affiliates fighting the advertising tax successfully in Colorado.

Here are some of initial highlights that I got from the call.

Brian Littleton offered some great tips for communicating with legislators including:

  • Don’t mention the unconstitutionality of any legislation. Legislators don’t like being told that what they are doing is unconstitutional.
  • Most legislators have two offices, one in their district and one at the legislature. Go to or call whichever is smallest.

From Jeannine Crooks who was having some audio difficulty unfortunately:

  • Don’t threaten to move. They generally don’t care.

Threats never work. Neither does telling them they are breaking the law. Stay level-headed and focus on the negative impact of the legislation.

One of the best tips came from Jen Goode who suggested that you try to find a local tie that affiliate marketing has to an organization in the legislator’s district, such as a non-profit or a school that uses affiliate marketing to raise money. This worked very well for them in Colorado.

More to come on this subject but these were some great tips!

Update on New ShareASale Traffic Report

As I posted Saturday, ShareASale has a new Traffic Report for tracking clicks, conversions, EPC, and more by bannerID and afftrack.

They made a few tweaks recently including to default it to Month-to-Date (MTD) and to allow you to run it for the current day.

Well done once again ShareASale!

New ShareASale Traffic Report

ShareASale just released their new Traffic Report and it is AWESOME!

It allows you to run a report for a period of time and view the clicks and the data associated with them such as hits, commissions, sales, conversions, EPC, etc.

You can run and order it by the following parameters (there may be more that I am missing):

  • various creative types (banners, text links, widgets, videos, etc.)
  • each merchant or all merchants
  • sales, commissions, epc, voids, etc.
  • afftrack and bannerID

As far as I am concerned, it may be the best report they have put out to date…although I do have a few personal favorites.

You can find it Under Reports/Stats.

It looks a little something like this:

Scott on ABestWeb did point out that it is missing default date values such as last month, month to date, and this week. Those would be good additions, but as it is I give this new report a 9 1/2 out of 10 stars!

Ultimately what you are trying to do is to frame the DVD courses in terms of private lessons.

Since people are not searching for DVD courses only, you must first convince them of the concept of learning at home. Many people have NO idea that

a. such an option exists
b. that such an option really CAN teach them what they want to learn.

So what they need is to:

a. be convinced of the extreme cost of private/group lessons and the difference in prices
b. be convinced of the convenience of at home lessons
- no missed appointments and payments for those
- travels with you
- on YOUR time
- can go at your own pace - relevant especially when compared to group lessons
- can repeat lessons anytime
c. be convinced that at home lessons are of equal or greater quality than private/group lessons. Many instructors are not qualified and it may take months to find the right one, which can cost hundreds of dollars.
d. be convinced that Learn & Master courses are by far better than other at home DVD courses AND better than most private instruction or group instruction, at a fraction of the cost, time, and more convenient.

February Bonuses Paid Today

I am still calculating one bonus that could be worth $500.00 but I did want to congratulate all of the ShareASale affiliates who earned $50.00 special bonuses for making ten sales in February.

In case you missed it, I asked affiliates to help us choose our February Bonus on ShareASale by voting in a poll.

One affiliate looks like she made fifty sales of our Guitar courses but I have to manually calculate that.

Well done all of you. Keep up the great work!

As a reminder, this month we have three special bonuses:

  1. Sell Twenty (20) Learn & Master Painting Courses and earn a $300.00 bonus.
  2. Sell fifteen (15) Learn & Master Ballroom Dance Courses and earn a $100.00 bonus.
  3. The $500 bonus for making 200 sales in a month (on top of the $200 and $325 bonuses for 50 and 100 sales) is increased to $2,000.00 this month!

Our regular bonuses like our $50.00 2nd Sale Bonus, our $200 50 sales for the month bonus, and all of the others listed on our ShareASale Promotions and Bonuses Page are in effect as always.

Our First Pay Per Call Commission Increase on ShareASale!

I just got to award our first commission increase on our Pay Per Call program on ShareASale to Marvin in the Bahamas, who is now earning $20.00 on every converting call.

A converting call is any call that presses [2] for information on buying the course and lasts over four minutes. As I mentioned in this post, we chose four minutes because that is under the average time that a buying call takes. Some take as much as twenty minutes while others take only four or five minutes. Most calls that last over four minutes result in a sale though.

After ten converting calls, we consider the number that actually bought and continue to adjust payouts based on the quality of the calls. Marvin’s calls were of an outstanding quality so he earned the increase. I am looking forward to giving him another one after his next ten or twenty calls and to giving increases to all of you who have not yet generated ten calls.

Affiliate Contests from Both Sides of the Tracks Podcast

So this post is three weeks late since I meant to post it when it first came out and totally forgot. Oops!

In the February 1 episode of the Both Sides of the Tracks podcast, hosts Eric Nagel and Jason Rubacky discuss affiliate contests. They spend quite a bit of time talking about the very successful LEGACY Week 2.0.

About the Both Sides of the Track podcast: What do you get when an affiliate development manager and an affiliate do a podcast? Views from both sides of the tracks. It’s the same issues, but rarely seen in the same way. ShareASale’s Jason Rubacky and affiliate Eric Nagel host.

Product Level Reporting on ShareASale

As of about one hour ago, we now have Product Level Reporting on ShareASale!

This means that you can now see what product was purchased by the customer on every sale going forward.

It’s very easy to access this information too. Just click on “Activity Details” under Reports/Stats (upper left when you login to ShareASale), then run the report for the time period you want and each sale will report the product that was purchased. It looks like this:

If there are more than one products purchased, it will show each of them separated by a comma. If more than one of a product is purchased, it will display the number that were bought.

I hope this helps you with promoting our products. As we add more and more courses, I am sure this will be even more relevant.

Speaking of new courses, be sure to check out the updates here on the blog about our upcoming Bass Guitar Spotlight course (and Fingerstyle Guitar as well)!

Also, if you got the email about it, don’t forget the look for the Easter Egg!
